3 Cases of Corynebacterium Group JK Isolated from Clinical Specimens

Abstract
Corynebacterium group JK is aerobic, slow growing, typical coryneform rods, having characteristic colonial morphology with metallic sheen, biochemical nonreactivity and marked antibiotic resistance. Although the majority of clinical isolates of Coryne¡þ
acterium spp. are contaminants, isolation of Corynebacterium group JK from patients with long period of hospitalization, mucocutaneous defect due to indwelling catheters or other devices, extensive granulocytopenia or receiving intensive antibiotic therapy is highly suggestive of the presence of a serious nosocomial infection.
One strain of Corynebacterium group JK was isolated from intravenous catheter in patient with advanced gastric cancer, one strain from urine in patient with duodenal cancer, and one strain from urine in patient with aplastic anemia. These strains had characteristic colony morphology, and inert biochemical characteristics. They were resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, oxacillin, carbenicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, tobramycin, amikacin, tetracycline, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
